I have always enjoyed reading Wolman's writing. Whether in the book-length projects such as THE END OF MONEY or A LEFT HAND TURN AROUND THE WORLD, or in the shorter investigative pieces I've read in Wired and elsewhere, Wolman walks a fine line between approachable and authoritative. Reading his work, I feel like I'm deep in conversation with a very smart, very close friend.The best part about Wolman's work is that he somehow manages to be right in the thick of the important topics of the day, and this is especially true of the pieces in this collection. The Truth About Autism is just as important a read today as it was when first published, and The Instigators is a marvelous behind-the-scenes view of the events leading to the Egyptian revolution. Through it all, Wolman maintains the conversational tone I have come to trust so much.

Have followed this sleuth for wonderful meaningful stories for more than a decade. Am so glad that he finally compiled it all into an accessible updated place that captures the diversity and versatility of his meanderings. Makes for great conversation starters, intriguing bedtime reading, or just a place to broaden the mind in the palm of your hand…Highly recommend this.
George Gollin has been found in violation of the Illinois State Employees and Officials Ethics Act and fined $5,000. George Gollin "knowingly and intentionally used his state-provided email account to engage in prohibited political activity...." George Gollin admitted he knew he was misappropriating state resources when he sent "dozens" of campaign emails with his university email. The Executive Ethics Commission levied a $5,000 fine against George Gollin, the maximum allowed under the statute.

I had read or heard in passing about a few of these stories in the past, but never connected them with one writer. I'm a features section guy, and I can't get enough of longform.org. So this is exactly the kind of collection for someone like me. It didn't disappoint. Great reporting. Tons of variety, some humor, a bit of adventure, and definitely intellectually satisfying. A few of the postscripts felt a little thin, but I respect the author for not padding them, either. The one about Egypt is flat-out heartbreaking.
As an avid Portland Monthly reader, I'm quite familiar with David Wolman's stories. He's an investigative reporter in the finest sense of the the word, due to his relentless curiosity in the service of the subject. Neither overly florid or dry as a bone, Wolman never fails to tell the reader what they want to know. After reading 'Firsthand' I marvel at not only his nose for a good story, but the thoughtful and intelligent ways that he tells one.
It's great to have a collection of David Wolman's best long features over the last decade, filled with terrific characters and fascinating stories. And I do love the model he's creating for other magazine writers (like yours truly), whose backlogs of "firsthand" reports from the field might make great anthologies of their own. What happened in this book might happen in other similar books (if Wolman starts the trend he's hoping to start), where themes emerge over the course of a writer's lifetime that might not have been obvious if you read the articles over many years. Those themes make it even more fun to read the pieces in one delicious sitting than it was to read them when they were first published. Highly recommended.
I bought this book because I really enjoyed Wolman's book "The End of Money" (it's excellent as well). I recommend it.
The best thing about his writing is his plain spoken but relentless curiosity. He's got a gift for taking you into the depths of hard and interesting issues without oversimplifying or using pesky jargon.
A great read.
It’s hard to pick the most interesting piece in this collection. The German artist whose obsessively detailed counterfeit bills should hang in the Louvre? The accidental nature reserve that has arisen around the most contaminated notorious nuclear site in the country? The story behind China’s high-altitude train to Tibet, complete with built-in oxygen masks? The guy who had his right hand surgically replaced with his left?
Whether you’re interested in technology, politics, linguistics, finance, or neurobiology, you’ll find something fascinating (and often hilarious) in Firsthand. Wolman makes oddballs empathetic and complex topics easily understandable, from the quest to rewrite the ludicrous rules of English spelling to the triumphs and heartbreaks of the Egyptian revolution.
